It’s been a while

It’s been a while since my last post, due to starting a new job, and any time focussing on fpl was spent wildcard planning ahead of last week. Firstly, Mahrez in for Son was a terrible choice. Mahrez blanked, whereas Son wasn’t injured and tore Man Utd to pieces
Wholesale changes were made, and I’m now happy with the fab 5 in my midfield and looking to play 3-5-2 with Brewster the cheap forward option who will hopefully pick up points when he’s brought into my side, and although I didn’t get the instant points haul some did this week, I feel positive going forward with the same squad this week and rolling a transfer over.
Only 4 players from GW4 survived the cull of the wild card: Lamptey and Ayling as cheap options at the back, Salah because he’s Mo Salah, and Super Callum Wilson up front after an impressive start to life at Newcastle.
In goal, I replaced the Brighton two with Martinez and a backup Villa goalie. This was a successful move, with Martinez picking up 9 pints against Leicester, compared to the 1 point Ryan scored against Palace. The poor guy never has a chance at a save point seeing as palace only had 1 shot all game, and that was a penalty.
in defence, the main attention grabbing move was taking Trent out and replacing him with Robertson. Robertson has been the more attacking option so far this season, and is 0.5m cheaper. Even before the Van Dijk injury, Liverpool weren’t looking as solid at the back this year so it’s attacking returns that I’m after, and Robbo provided with an assist against Everton.
Ben Chilwell also provided an assist for Chelsea after being brought in, with my 5th defender being James Justin at Leicester, however this may need reviewing when Pereira (who’s value has dropped massively and I’m hoping to afford) returns to fitness.
My midfield has 3 of the most impressive midfielders so far this season, one returning premium option from last year, and one expensive gamble... yes. I’ve gone there, and it nearly paid off instantly!
Back in came Son. i only sold him in GW 4 because of his supposed injury. I always planned to keep him.
As previously mentioned, Salah stayed. Because why would anyone ever get rid of Mo? (Just pretend you haven’t read my post where I considered not starting the season with him).
The third midfielder in the squad is Jack Grealish. Whilst I will still argue with anyone that James Maddison is the better player out of the two and should be in the England reckoning ahead of him (both should be in the side though), it’s hard to ignore the more advanced role Grealish is playing this season, and he was unlucky to come out of the Leicester game with just 3 points (side note: I thought very hard about including Ross Barkley, but decided to go for the power 5 in midfield. If he continues his form though, he will allow me to increase my options up front by freeing up funds to replace Brewster)
Christian Pulisic was also brought in. At the start of the season I wanted him at £8.5m. He’s now back fully for and down to £8.3 so he was a no brainer. Let’s hope he can recapture the form he showed at the end of last season.
And then the ultimate sentiment pick. Gareth Bale. I appreciate its a big if, but if he can recapture his old form, he could make a mockery of his £9.5m price tag. As soon as he came on he was on set pieces, and after doing brilliant to carve out a chance for himself, he should’ve done better with his finish. An xG of .43 in just 18 minutes is enough to keep me believing that he’s worth the risk (albeit it was only against Burnley).
Up Front, I’ve already mentioned two of my three strikers in Wilson and Brewster. And there’s no prizes for guessing the third. I wanted Kane too but couldn’t get the funds after splurging on my midfielders. But the man I couldn’t ignore any longer was Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He’s been an absolute goal machine so far this season. Long May it continue.
So this week I will bank my transfer. I saw enough in my midfield blankets to suggest that points will be on their way soon.
Salah captain at home to Sheff United this week. Obvious choice
